In summary, the MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards.

You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

• The third anniversary of its registration
• If it is older than three years old and it is the anniversary of its last MOT

Consequently, driving a vehicle without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of £1,000.

CHECK MOT STATUS

What does an MOT check involve?

• Part 1

  • Body and vehicle structure: it is free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas and there are no sharp edges likely to cause injury.

  • Fuel system: it has no leaks and the fuel cap fastens and seals securely. We will need to open the fuel cap so be sure the key is available.

  • Exhaust: it meets the requirements for emissions, depending on the age and fuel type of the vehicle.

  • Exhaust system: it is secure, complete, without serious leaks and silences effectively.
    
    

• Part 2

  • Seat belts: for type, condition, operation and security and that all compulsory seat belts are in place.

  • Seats: are safe and secure when in the upright position.

  • Doors: that your doors latch securely when closed and that we can open the front doors from the inside and outside of the vehicle. We may need to open the rear doors to gain access to testable items.

  • Mirrors: are in place, in good condition and secure.

  • Brakes: are in a good condition and they perform and operate satisfactory. Note we do not remove road wheels as part of the test.
    
    

• Part 3

  • Boot: is secure in the closed position.

  • Tyres and wheels: are in good condition, secure, of the correct size and type and tread depth is sufficient. We do not inspect spare tyres.

  • Registration plates: are in good condition, secure and that the characters are correctly formed and spaced.

  • Lights: to ensure they are in operational condition and secure, we also test headlamps for aim.

  • Bonnet: is latched securely when in the closed position.
    
    

• Part 4

  • Wipers and washers: that your wipers and washers operate to give the driver a clear view ahead.

  • Windscreen: is in good condition and the driver’s view of the road is clear.

  • Horn: operates correctly and is of a suitable type.

  • Steering and suspension: Are of a satisfactory condition and operation.

  • Vehicle identification number (VIN): On vehicles first used on or after the 1st of August 1980. Not more than one different VIN is displayed except on multistage build vehicles.
