According to latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), more than four million used cars have been sold in the first half of a year for the first time in the industry’s history.

Initial estimates suggest that as many as 4.18 million vehicles with at least one previous owner were snapped up between January and the end of June – a staggering increase of 300,000 units when compared to the same period in 2015.

Ford and Vauxhall were the big winners with regard to sales, with Ford’s Fiesta and Focus models dominating the top two slots, and Vauxhall’s Corsa and Astra making up the remainder of the top four. According to figures published in financial supplement This is Money, the top ten best selling cars of 2016 so far, and each respective model’s sales figures, are as follows:

1. Ford Fiesta (58,967)
2. Ford Focus (40,871)
3. Vauxhall Corsa (37,724)
4. Vauxhall Astra (27,162)
5. Volkswagen Golf (25,339)
6. Nissan Qashqai (23,286)
7. Fiat 500 (18,757)
8. Volkswagen Polo (18,663)
9. Nissan Juke (17,572)
10. Peugeot 208 (16,561)

The SMMT has also revealed the UK automotive sector as a whole is continuing to make ‘significant gains’ when it comes to employment, economic contribution and environmental performance, while the industry is reported to have turned over a colossal £71.6 billion in 2015 alone, representing a growth of 7.3% on the previous year’s results.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “UK Automotive has gone from strength to strength, and is now delivering record turnover, record productivity and more jobs. These strong results go hand in hand with a steadfast commitment to improving our environmental performance.

“The first six months of the year has seen the UK’s second hand market at its strongest ever.”
