The main purpose of a family car is to be practical. Family cars should comfortably seat a minimum of four people and there should be enough space for everyone's luggage.

Most families are looking for something affordable and economical. A comfortable car with enough technology to keep the driver and passengers entertained.

One of the most important aspects is the ability to move the whole family from point A to point B. Family cars will mainly be used for school runs, annual family holidays and trips to see the grandparents.

Types of family cars

There is a whole range of family cars. They come in different shapes and sizes, suitable for every type of family and their needs.

Hatchbacks

Traditional family hatchbacks like the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus never disappoint. These hatchbacks have great economical engines. As a general all-round package, they are hard to beat. In today's society, they could even be classed as small family car.

SUVs

SUVs are in high demand in the UK and manufacturers are responding to this by leaving you with plenty of choice. Recent models are very advanced in engine technology which means they're much more affordable to run than you might think.

MPVs

If space and practicality are the most important factors for your family, then you'll need to look at an MPV. They are designed for families and they often feature clever storage solutions to make life easier. MPV often have space for 7 people.

Saloons

Saloons score well on a lot of factors. They look smart, handle great and fit four or five people comfortably. The boot offers enough space for pushchairs, suitcases and shopping bags.

Estates

These extended hatchbacks or saloons offer all of the great features of their more common equivalents, but with a touch of extra cargo room for extra practicality.
